Living History Events for Heritage Week '09
(Saturday 22 August - Sunday 30 August 2009)
As part of Heritage Week 2009, Kerry County Museum is hosting a number of exciting living history events for the community. In addition to our Summer Family Fun (children go free and adults are €5 only), there are also free guided tours of the Medieval Experience for adults and families every day. Guided tours are followed by a sampling of medieval food in Cafe Essence at the Museum. Chefs Daniel and Richard will also offer an alternative medieval menu for the duration of Heritage Week. Food, cooking and table manners will also be the subject of an early evening Talk and Food Tasting Event at Cafe Essence on Saturday 29 August at 5pm. Please note that prior booking is essential for all events as places are strictly limited.

PROGRAMME OF LIVING HISTORY EVENTS:

Saints & Sinners: LIFE IN MEDIEVAL TRALEE

Guided tours for adults: DAILY AT 11.30AM

Pigs, poverty and pestilence... but there was fun too! Explore life and death in medieval Tralee and find out why the Fitzgeralds who founded the town in 1216 also ordered Tralee to be completely destroyed in the 1580s. Guided tours last for about 45 minutes up to one hour. Following the tour we would like to invite you to sample some authentic medieval cuisine in Cafe Essence at the Museum. Booking essential

HORRIBLE HISTORY: LIFE IN MEDIEVAL TRALEE

Guided tours for families: DAILY AT 3PM

UUURG! PHEWW! YUCK! What's that smell? Travel back in time more than 500 years to find out what life was really like in medieval Tralee. Did children have to go to school? Did they have games and toys to play with? Did they have only horrible food? Actually, why don't you find out for yourself? Following our tour of Geraldine Tralee we would like to see if you dare to try some medieval food in Cafe Essence at the Museum. Booking essential

FANCY A PIGEON PIE? FOOD IN MEDIEVAL IRELAND

Talk and Food Tasting: SATURDAY 29 AUGUST AT 5PM

Sorry, no spuds! And no tea, coffee or chocolate either... What did people eat in the past and how do we know about it? This talk will explore the subjects of medieval food, the "dos and don'ts" at the dinner table and what medieval bones can tell us about the diet of the rich and the poor. The talk will take place in Cafe Essence at the Museum. Chefs Daniel and Richard will prepare an alternative medieval menu and they might even let you in on their recipes for pigeon pie and other curious culinary highlights of the Middle Ages. Booking essential
